Hybrid 31ft wire vertical setup
  • The other day Nick, W3NRL asked about the Hybrid and wire and today I set up a Hybrid base with the supplied wire, which if straightened out and with the spring and hybrid base is about 32 ft in length. Used a 31 ft Jackite kite pole(which had a wire antenna ,with a well-known manufacturers 4:1 balun, that had very SWR on 40 and 80m of  >9.9:1 on my analyser and rig). 4 buried radials 32 ft long, and grounded to 8 ft ground rod at base. The pole to which the kite-pole is attached for stability is also non-conductive, but there is a a strut at 6 foot which is insulated to give support. As can be seen in the pictures it is close to the dividing wall of my house, and not in the best of locations, but is hidden in the palm trees - antenna restrictions !!  The main purpose of my set up is to have a better antenna on 40 and 80 meters.
    Results so far:
    1. SWR is  3.4:1 across the 80 meter band
4.2 to 4.5:1 across the 40 meter band
and less than 2.5:1 for 30 to 6 meters
    2. Today 5/10/12 at my QTH bands were horrendous. Was able to make contacts with vertical on 17 meters with Austria and Bosnia with 600 watts and received a 58 and 59 (not
credible as competition station. The vertical hears 2 s-units better on 40 meters - this is to be expected as it is set-up for this band. 80 meters was not open here at the time. The vertical hears a bit better than the Hybrid-V1-whip on 20 from the little that I could hear, but is 1-2 s-units down on 17 meters. These anecdotal evaluations were done with an external tuner in operation. The Hybrid-V1 base-whip is certainly a 17 meter weapon at my QTH - during my limited testing I got a 59+30 report from MI6XRC(M), I was using my amplifier and for the moment had that "magic channel with the magic base" !

    All advice and comments appreciated.

  • Have worked stateside stations with good reports with 100watts and today Dx with 400watts-Guam and New Zealand on 40 meters. Never before worked 40 meter DX into Pacific from Florida, but did need some power to be heard.

i too used the jacklite pole but used a configuration with 107 feet of wire and work somewhat well 160-6 meters and planing changing my configuration tomorrow and see what that does for me
i am enjoying changing the wire and jacklite  to get better gain. I've worked ja's, 7x's,9a,HC,ut, and many others, i think i can do better
     we shall see
    very best 73

Thanks for the info - soon it will be time for me to try other configurations. Assessment so far is the wire-vertical is superior on 40 and 80 meters, but overall is noisier than than the V1L base hybrid with whip. Have 4 31ft radials, but will add more (have very narrow strip of land 65 X 4 ft to play with) and see what that does.
  • To reduce the noise on 40M - 80M ground the HYBRID at the base to earth.
  • I put the hybrid and the long wire thru it's paces on field day weekend and it perform fantastic
made a few minor changes the morning of first day of field day and it was a big plus, so now this week i will make additional changes i will follow up later
  • Let us know what exactly did you. I'm very curious about it!!

    Cheers,

    Carl
  • sorry i didn't get back sooner i was in VA hospital
    Anyway enough of that
I had the long wire plus a telescope fiber jacklite with 46 feet of wire wrapped around the jack lite, the had the top section going 84 feet up in the tree, i cut that in 42 feet sections and soldered them together one going one direction over the roof of the house and the other over the trees in the back of the house
, this made field day a success, since then i raised  the Apex a bit higher.
Few of the guys and lady went to a local hamfest and i picked a tripod at a nice price since it was the end of the ham fest the seller didn't want to take it back home so i have possession of the tripod.  The idea of putting the jack lite on the tripod and going up, this will happen soon
  • I had a nice qso with Rafi 4x4fr 59+ for the entire qso ( 15 mins ) with this antenna, Also with CN8LL 59,
IZ1LBG 59 as well, TM0TSR 59,  when bands are poor condition. ( east coast )
Thinking of other configuration to make, but i have 8 antennas up as we speak now, having fun anyway. My neighbors think i cracked and going crazy and should be some where safe....
