V4 as a 2meter Base Antenna
  • Carl,

    I am thinking of using the V4 antenna as a Base Antenna for 2 meters only.  What gems of info can you give me to optimize its operation on 2 meters.  Example questions;

    1. How high should it be mounted; what should the minimum height be?

    2. Should the mounting pole be metal or fiberglass(insulated or uninsulated)?

    3. Should I ground the coax side of the mount to a ground rod or buried radials ?

    4. Should I install 3 to 4 down sloping radials (40-45degrees) approx. 1 meter in length, off the coax side of the mount?

    5. Should I install an RFI choke (3-7 turns) in the coax?

    6. What else should I do to optimize its operation and minimize SWR?

    Thanks, in advance, for your help,   ...Joel

  • Joel,

    Mount the antenna as high as possible. The minimum would be about 10' high but the higher the better.

    Mount directly to a metal pole if possible.

    Ground the coax side to the pole.

    For 2M no need for radials. The metal pole will easily do the job.

    NO need of choke on 2M.

    The main thing to optimize the SWR is the height.
