Fast to deploy and easy to tune

"It took 5 minutes to set up with the Faraday Strip and it tune 1. 05:1 on 20m. Then the POTA activation this day end with 35 QSO in less then 2 hours. It make it ideal for public park usage, fast to deploy and the same for dismount, this antenna will become my 1st antenna system for my next POTA ops this summer. 73, de VA2OPS"

Great kit

"I've started experimenting with this as both a ground mounted vertical and an elevated vertical with tuned radials. It's just a very simple way to get a resonant antenna on the air quickly. A lot of my operating is QRP, so running this elevated with a couple tuned radials makes sure that I get as much of my 5W coming off the radiator as possible with a low take off angle."

Todd D. (5/5)

Cha-BV antenna

"I recently purchased a CHA BV, I have had a chance to use it a couple of times and it has worked very well. My favorite features of this are the quality, performance and most of all the ease and speed of the setup. I own several other portable antennas and this is my overall favorite!!"

Corry W. (5/5)

Excellent

"Easy to setup. Contacted Chile for San Francisco California"

Marco (5/5)

Elegant Well-Built Portable Antenna Solution

"I am delighted with this elegant and well-made antenna! In a recent POTA activation it performed nicely on the two bands I used. I like the simplicity of setup, and the ease of tweaking for optimum performance. Setup takes 10-15 minutes and retrieval about the same. I have used many, many portable antennas in 60 years of ham radio. This spike vertical is easily the best of them for most applications."

David J. (5/5)

Loving this kit!

"Bought it as my first leap into a proper resonant antenna, and for use while camping or other outdoor activities, LOVING it so far! Everything is really well made and so easy to just toss into a backpack!"

David S. (5/5)

Great System

"WOW! What a great antenna setup with the M25 coil combined with the stinger counterpoise system. My SWR flatlined at 1:1 on 40 meters and I was booming across Texas on a RACES net check-in."

REX (5/5)

Extraordinary Performance

"I have built many wire antenna's including verticals and tuned them for resonance. I thought that by building my own I could match the performance and ease of setup that a commercial antenna like the BV could do. Yes, I have had success with wire antenna's and continue to use them at my base. However, I bought the BV and it exceeded my expectations! Ease of setup +5 stars. No tuning for 40 or 20 meter bands, +5 Stars! Quality of the build over cheaper import copies, +10 Stars! It has been well worth the investment to use with my portable station for POTA and operations at home. You won't regret the purchase of this antenna system. KD5SMF- Tulsa, OK"

Great quality

"Solid quality and well built. It can be pricey, but you certainly are paying for great quality that should last."

Complete product details

The CHA BV (Basic Vertical) from Chameleon Antenna™ redefines versatility in portable antennas, offering an efficient and highly adaptable setup for single-band resonance from 40 to 6 meters. This antenna is specifically engineered to meet the needs of field operators, emergency responders, and amateur radio enthusiasts who require reliable communication in varied environments. Here’s an in-depth look at what makes the CHA BV exceptional:

Key Components and Features

  • Sturdy Ground Mounting with CHA SPIKE MOUNT
The CHA SPIKE MOUNT allows easy installation by driving securely into the ground, providing a stable base for the antenna. This rugged mount is designed to withstand challenging conditions and keep the antenna in position, making it ideal for temporary field setups or areas with uneven ground.
  • Efficient Resonant Design with Adjustable Band Coverage
The CHA BV operates as a single-band, resonant vertical antenna for frequencies from 40 to 6 meters. Out of the box, it provides seamless operation from 20 to 6 meters, while the included Medium Loading Coil extends its reach to the 30 and 40-meter bands, adding flexibility for operators needing lower HF band access. Additionally, an optional 60 ft. Lazy Sloper kit can be added to expand coverage further, allowing operation on 60, 75, and even 80 meters.
  • High-Performance Telescopic Radiator: CHA SS17 Whip
The CHA BV uses the SS17 Whip, a durable, 17-foot telescopic whip antenna crafted from stainless steel. When fully extended, the whip resonates over a broad frequency range (up to 117 MHz) and folds down to 24 inches for easy transport. This telescopic design lets operators fine-tune the whip length to optimize resonance for specific bands, ensuring minimal SWR for improved efficiency.
  • Radials System for Efficient Grounding
A critical element for unbalanced vertical antennas, the CHA BV includes four 12'6" radial wires on line winders. These radials are connected to the CHA PUCK HUB, a robust machined aluminum hub designed to anchor multiple radials. Operators can adjust the radial length as needed, coiling excess wire for higher bands, or extending them fully to support efficient 40-meter operation. This radial system enhances grounding, which is essential for stable signal propagation and minimal interference.
  • Modular and Expandable within the MPAS Ecosystem
As a member of the MPAS family, the CHA BV is compatible with various Chameleon Antenna™ components, enabling easy upgrades. By integrating other MPAS accessories like the CHA Hybrid Mini or CHA Hybrid Micro transformers, users can transform the CHA BV into a broadband vertical (MPAS Lite) that operates continuously from 1.8 to 54 MHz, providing more comprehensive frequency access without needing to replace the core antenna setup. This modular approach allows users to expand and customize their equipment over time, ensuring the CHA BV remains adaptable and future-proof.
  • High-Quality Coaxial Cable with Integrated RFI Choke
A 12-foot RG-58 coaxial cable with an integrated RFI choke is included, designed to reduce radio frequency interference, improving signal clarity and stability. This addition is especially beneficial for field operators where environmental factors may introduce unwanted interference.

Assembly and Tuning for Optimal Performance

Setting up the CHA BV is a quick process, often completed in less than 10 minutes by one operator. The steps involve selecting a clear area (ideally about 26 feet in diameter), driving the SPIKE MOUNT into the ground, and assembling the antenna components as per the desired band. Adjusting the telescopic whip to the correct length, fine-tuning radial lengths, and connecting to a transceiver are all straightforward tasks.

The CHA BV also supports quick band changes with a telescoping whip, which can be lengthened or shortened to achieve optimal resonance within a band. This flexibility is complemented by the antenna’s low SWR (<2.0:1) across supported bands, which can be adjusted further using the whip’s length and radial configuration.

Extended Coverage and Additional Configurations

The CHA BV’s modular build allows it to be converted into an Inverted Lazy "L" antenna for extended low-frequency coverage. Using the optional CHA LZ SLOPER (60 ft.), the antenna can operate on 60, 75, and 80 meters. This configuration provides HF communication over longer distances, which is invaluable for emergency communications or low-frequency ham operations in remote areas.

Ideal for a Wide Range of Applications

The CHA BV’s robust design, coupled with its lightweight, modular build, makes it suitable for a range of portable operations, including:

  • Field Day Operations: Lightweight yet durable for easy transport and setup in outdoor environments.
  • Emergency Communications (EMCOMM): Quickly deployable, the CHA BV provides reliable communication channels for first responders and emergency personnel.
  • Amateur Radio Activities: Ideal for portable amateur radio operations (e.g., Parks on the Air or Summits on the Air), providing dependable HF communications in various locations.

The CHA BV from Chameleon Antenna™ is more than a portable antenna; it’s a fully adaptable communication solution designed for those who require performance, resilience, and versatility in the field. Built with the operator in mind, this resonant antenna delivers on both simplicity and depth of performance, making it an essential tool in any operator's equipment lineup.
