CHA HUB – Introduction & User Guide Overview
Versatile – Dependable – Stealth – Built to Last
The Chameleon Antenna™ HUB (CHA HUB) is one of the most flexible and powerful components in the entire MPAS Ready antenna ecosystem. Although released years ago, it remains a customer favorite due to its rugged construction, field versatility, and ability to support a wide variety of HF antenna configurations.
This short guide introduces the CHA HUB and demonstrates the most common and effective ways operators can use it for portable, emergency, and home-based communication.
What the CHA HUB Is
The CHA HUB is a multi-configuration central connector designed to serve as the main junction point for numerous antenna layouts. Originally engineered as the heart of the Tactical Delta Loop antenna, it quickly became clear that the HUB could enable many different portable antenna systems using MPAS Ready components.
With a single HUB, operators can create portable dipoles, verticals, delta loops, and wire antennas tailored for:
- NVIS (Near-Vertical Incidence Skywave)
- Short-range regional communication
- Medium-range skywave
- Long-distance DX
Its strength lies in its simplicity: one rugged central connection point that unlocks dozens of antenna possibilities.
Why Operators Love the CHA HUB
1. Incredible Versatility
The HUB works seamlessly with Chameleon whips, matching transformers, masts, radials, wire elements, and field accessories. With a few parts, you can assemble six primary antenna systems—plus countless variations.
2. Built for Real-World Use
Constructed from high-quality materials and designed by Chameleon Antenna engineers, the HUB is tough, compact, weather-resistant, and ideal for both hobby and mission-critical communication.
3. Quick Deployment & Stealth
Whether you’re operating from a campsite, RV, HOA home, or emergency site, the HUB supports ultra-fast setup and takedown with a minimal visual footprint.
Primary Antenna Configurations Supported by the CHA HUB
Below are the six core antenna configurations the HUB enables. Each one provides unique propagation characteristics depending on your operating environment and mission.
1. Tactical Delta Loop
A portable inverted delta-loop antenna covering 80–6 meters, optimized for compact spaces and rapid deployment. It excels on the higher HF bands with useful NVIS capability on the lower bands. Ideal for EMCOMM, preparedness, camping, and HOA-limited locations.
2. Portable “V” Dipoles
Two main versions can be assembled using whips and the HUB:
Broadband “V” Dipole
A short- to medium-range broadband antenna covering 1.8–54 MHz (antenna tuner required).
- NVIS-friendly below 10 MHz
- Medium-range performance above 10 MHz
- Bidirectional on higher bands, omnidirectional on lower bands
- Elevates the antenna ends, improving performance over a flat dipole
Resonant “V” Dipole
Designed for resonance on 40m through 6m without an antenna tuner.
- Uses CHA M-COILs for 40m and 30m
- Whip length adjustments set the operating frequency
- Perfect when efficiency and tuner-free operation are desired
3. Inverted “V” Dipole
A lightweight NVIS-oriented broadband dipole using two 33’ wires.
- Covers 1.8–54 MHz (tuner required)
- Excellent for emergency regional communication
- Very stealthy and fast to deploy
- Bidirectional on higher frequencies, omnidirectional on lower ones
4. Shortened Sloping Wire
A simple, ultra-portable, single-wire broadband antenna perfect for rapid field work:
- 1.8–54 MHz coverage (tuner required)
- Groundwave, NVIS, and short-range skywave capability
- Minimal components, ideal for man-pack portable operation
- Low visual signature and extremely forgiving setup
5. Elevated Vertical Configuration
A highly efficient vertical antenna using elevated radials that also serve as guy lines.
- 1.8–54 MHz performance
- Omnidirectional
- Much higher efficiency than ground-mounted verticals
- Works with MIL WHIP or SS17 for different performance goals
- Great all-purpose field antenna
6. Tall Vertical Configuration
A 25 ft+ portable vertical designed for operators who need maximum performance:
- Outstanding DX capability above 10 MHz
- Improved low-band efficiency due to height
- Stable, guyed system with counterpoise wires
- Tuner required
- One of the strongest long-distance configurations supported by the HUB
Performance Summary
The HUB supports both resonant and broadband systems.
- Broadband systems (loops, verticals, sloping wires, most dipoles) typically require an antenna tuner.
- Resonant systems (like the resonant “V” dipole) operate efficiently without a tuner.
- The CHA HUB’s design ensures solid electrical connection and mechanical stability across all supported configurations.
Final Notes
The CHA HUB represents the core philosophy of Chameleon Antenna™—a single rugged tool that solves multiple communication needs. Whether for emergency response, outdoor recreation, HOA restrictions, or professional field communication, the HUB gives users unmatched flexibility and reliability.
