Can Earth Ground and Counterpoise Share the CHA URT1 Ground Connector?

Yes. Earth bonding and antenna counterpoise conductors can share the URT1 Ground Connector as parallel paths without canceling the counterpoise.

Quick answer: Yes. A properly bonded earth connection and the antenna counterpoise or radials may share the CHA URT1 Ground Connector. They become parallel paths; the earth connection does not cancel the counterpoise.

The CHA URT1 Ground Connector can serve different functions depending on the approved antenna configuration. A counterpoise is part of the antenna’s RF return system. A permanent earth/bonding conductor serves safety, static, and lightning-protection objectives when integrated into a correctly designed installation.

Important: A separate, isolated rod is not a complete safety or lightning system. Any permanent electrode must be bonded as required by applicable electrical codes.

What happens electrically

At RF, current divides among all available paths according to their impedance at that frequency. A radial or counterpoise provides a controlled metal path. A rod and soil are usually more lossy and less predictable at HF. Sharing the terminal therefore does not short out the counterpoise.

Direct-wire or vertical URT1 setup

  1. Connect the radiator to the approved CHA URT1 antenna terminal for the selected configuration.
  2. Connect the required counterpoise or radial conductors to the Ground Connector.
  3. For a permanent installation, connect the tuner to the coordinated station grounding/bonding system as designed.
  4. Route the return conductors away from people and do not touch them while transmitting.
  5. Tune within the current CHA URT1 manual limits and begin at low power.

When no counterpoise is required

A coax-fed balanced antenna with its correct BALUN may not use the URT1 Ground Connector as an RF return because the two antenna conductors provide the differential current path. Grounding and entry protection may still be required for the permanent installation.
