A signal that tunes cleanly can still overheat a transformer or connection during long transmissions. Duty cycle belongs in the antenna plan.
Build the documented shape
- Identify the exact HYBRID MICRO or MINI.
- Use the guide’s mode-specific power limit, not the SSB number.
- Inspect and dry connectors before sustained operation.
- Begin below the intended power and check for instability or heating.
Why an operator chooses it
The antenna geometry still controls the path. Digital mode does not turn a vertical into NVIS or remove the need for the documented counterpoise.
Read the site before opening the bag
Place the matching unit where it can be inspected and where heat is not trapped by a bag, cover, or direct contact with combustible material.
Common ways this goes wrong
- Using the SSB rating for FT8, FT4, or JS8Call.
- Increasing power to compensate for a poor path.
- Ignoring intermittent SWR change during a long transmission.
- Leaving an unattended station without a controlled operating plan.
Before you transmit
- Confirm the exact radiator, matching unit, return path, feed line, and support arrangement.
- Keep conductors and supports clear of power lines and uncontrolled public access.
- Reproduce the guide dimensions before experimenting.
- Inspect every connection and begin testing at low power.
- Record geometry, band, tuner state, and the result before changing one variable.
