Wind loads the radiator, feed point, guy lines, anchors, and operator. A configuration that stands briefly is not automatically safe to operate.

Build the documented shape

  • Choose the least exposed documented configuration that meets the path.
  • Test anchors and guying before raising the antenna.
  • Keep the fall zone clear.
  • Define a stop-work threshold and lower the system before gusts control it.

Why an operator chooses it

A low Horizontal NVIS wire may reduce vertical exposure but creates a larger public-access footprint. The Manpack Vertical reduces height but still needs stability.

Read the site before opening the bag

Watch the support and feed line while testing at low power. Movement that changes SWR is diagnostic evidence and a mechanical warning.

Common ways this goes wrong

  • Using the antenna as its own wind gauge.
  • Adding undocumented extensions for more height.
  • Standing inside the fall zone.
  • Continuing because the contact is almost complete.

Before you transmit

  • Confirm the exact radiator, matching unit, return path, feed line, and support arrangement.
  • Keep conductors and supports clear of power lines and uncontrolled public access.
  • Reproduce the guide dimensions before experimenting.
  • Inspect every connection and begin testing at low power.
  • Record geometry, band, tuner state, and the result before changing one variable.
