In plain language: The 60 ft supplied wire can serve as the radiator in wire configurations or be unwound as the counterpoise in the vertical configuration; the selected geometry determines its job.
The winder does not define the electrical role. The connection point and deployed path do.
Build the documented shape
- For Telescoping Vertical, unwind the guide-directed counterpoise length and lay it on the ground.
- For wire configurations, connect the 60 ft wire as the radiator and add a separate 25 ft counterpoise where the guide specifies or recommends it.
- Use the integrated feed-point choke in the supplied coax.
- Keep the return conductor separate from the radiator and feed line.
Why an operator chooses it
A tuner may still find a match when the intended return path is missing, because current found another route. That route may include the coax or nearby metal.
Read the site before opening the bag
Record wire length, direction, ground condition, and choke location when comparing sites.
Common ways this goes wrong
- Leaving the counterpoise coiled.
- Adding a separate CHA RFI CHOKE when the selected coax already includes the feed-point choke.
- Assuming any banana-plug radial fits the spike connection.
- Using a mount’s metal support as an undocumented return.
Before you transmit
- Confirm the exact radiator, matching unit, return path, feed line, and support arrangement.
- Keep conductors and supports clear of power lines and uncontrolled public access.
- Reproduce the guide dimensions before experimenting.
- Inspect every connection and begin testing at low power.
- Record geometry, band, tuner state, and the result before changing one variable.
Boundary: Use the guide’s connection hardware. Mechanical fit does not establish the radial system.
