CHA URT1 Engineering Guide: Power Requirements and Long Feedlines

The CHA URT1 sends RF, 12 VDC power, and control between its indoor Coupler Unit and outdoor Tuner Unit over the same coaxial cable. Nothing belongs in that protected coax run.

In plain language: The CHA URT1 sends RF, 12 VDC power, and control between its indoor Coupler Unit and outdoor Tuner Unit over the same coaxial cable. Nothing belongs in that protected coax run.

Why this matters in a Chameleon system

This is not an ordinary station-to-antenna feed line. An inline switch, meter, amplifier, diplexer, or other device can interrupt the bias-T path, short the DC supply, damage the tuner, and prevent operation.

Build or diagnose it this way

  • Connect the radio to TRANSMITTER on the Coupler Unit.
  • Connect TUNER on the Coupler Unit directly to COUPLER on the Tuner Unit.
  • Supply 12–14 VDC and use only 0.5–15 watts while tuning.
  • Put optional station devices only between the transceiver and Coupler Unit.

Wrong turns to avoid

  • Treating the protected coax as a normal accessory chain.
  • Exceeding 14 VDC or tuning at full operating power.
  • Diagnosing the antenna before checking that coax for a short.
