Chameleon MPAS and HYBRID: Radials, Counterpoises, and Common-Mode Control

Understand why return conductors and choke placement are functional antenna components in current MPAS and HYBRID configurations.

Quick answer: For CHA MPAS and HYBRID configurations, the radial or counterpoise and the specified coax/choke arrangement are functional antenna components. A spike mount touching soil does not replace them.

The controlling User Guide for the exact product and configuration determines which wire connects where. Some configurations intentionally use a counterpoise; some may use a documented coax length as part of the return path; vertical configurations can benefit from multiple radials.

Important: Do not combine instructions from different MPAS, HYBRID, or legacy guide revisions. Confirm the exact product, transformer, radiator, and current guide before deployment.

Portable verticals

The whip is one side of the antenna. The radial/counterpoise system is the other side. More complete and symmetrical return systems generally make performance and tuning more predictable, but use only mechanically safe, documented configurations.

End-fed and wire configurations

The HYBRID transformer changes impedance; it does not eliminate the need for return current. If the guide permits the feed line to serve as part of that return, the coax length and choke position become part of the antenna system.

A useful field test

  1. Deploy the documented baseline.
  2. Record SWR and receive noise.
  3. Add or rearrange only the approved counterpoise/radial component.
  4. Repeat the same measurement.
  5. If moving coax changes the result, investigate common-mode current and choke placement.
