Choosing a Current BALUN for CHA URT1 Balanced Feedline

Learn the difference between BALUN and UNUN, what transformer ratios do, and why the antenna, line, bands, impedance, power, and duty cycle must be evaluated together.

Short answer: The interface must be a current BALUN appropriate for the complete antenna system. Do not choose a ratio solely from the number printed on the balanced line, and do not substitute an UNUN for the required balanced-to-unbalanced transition.

BALUN and UNUN are different jobs

A BALUN connects a balanced system to an unbalanced system. An UNUN connects two unbalanced systems. The URT1 ANTENNA connector is unbalanced; a conventional ladder-line-fed doublet or balanced loop is balanced. That connection therefore calls for a BALUN.

The words "current BALUN" matter. A current-type device is intended to encourage equal and opposite currents in the balanced conductors and impede unwanted common-mode current. This is generally the preferred behavior for a multiband balanced antenna system.

What the transformer ratio actually does

An ideal impedance-transforming BALUN changes the impedance ratio presented across its ports. For example, an ideal 4:1 impedance ratio transforms a 200-ohm resistance on the balanced side to 50 ohms on the unbalanced side. Real multiband antenna loads are often reactive and vary greatly by band, so the result is not that simple.

A ratio that helps a high-resistance band may push a low-resistance band below the URT1's nominal matching range. It can also increase voltage or current stress inside the transformer. That is why one ratio cannot be declared best from line type alone.

How to think about common ratios

  • 1:1 current BALUN: provides the balanced-to-unbalanced transition without intentionally changing the impedance ratio. It is a logical baseline when the URT1 can directly handle the resulting load.
  • 4:1 current BALUN: may help when the complete system presents a suitably high tuner-side impedance, but the device must actually be a current BALUN. The current Chameleon 4:1 catalog transformer is classified as an UNUN and must not be treated as a direct replacement for a 4:1 current BALUN.
  • 6:1 or 9:1 BALUN: can be useful in a validated system when their transformation improves the load presented to the tuner. The 300- or 450-ohm nominal relationship does not by itself prove suitability.

A practical selection process

  1. Start with the exact connection and BALUN guidance in the newest URT1 Operator's Manual.
  2. Confirm the device is a current BALUN, not an UNUN.
  3. Define the antenna, balanced-line type and length, bands, height, and power.
  4. Measure or model the tuner-side impedance where practical.
  5. Choose only a ratio that keeps the intended loads within the tuner's practical range and within the transformer's voltage, current, heating, and insulation limits.
  6. Tune at low power and inspect for heating, arcing, unstable tuning, or common-mode symptoms before increasing power.

When no ratio seems to work

The transformer may not be the correct variable to change. A difficult band can result from an extreme impedance caused by the balanced-line electrical length. Adjusting line length can move the load to a more manageable region without changing the antenna. Installation asymmetry, metal proximity, moisture, or a damaged connection can also create symptoms that resemble a ratio problem.

Right tool for the right job: Chameleon documentation should identify complete tested combinations. The operator should not be expected to guess a transformer ratio by dividing the number printed on the feedline by 50.
