Current Baluns vs. Voltage Baluns

A current balun promotes equal-and-opposite load currents and impedes common-mode current; a voltage balun imposes equal-and-opposite port voltages. The distinction matters when the antenna is not perfectly symmetric.

The design point: A current balun promotes equal-and-opposite load currents and impedes common-mode current; a voltage balun imposes equal-and-opposite port voltages. The distinction matters when the antenna is not perfectly symmetric.

Why the complete system matters

Current designs are commonly preferred where feed-line current must be controlled across an unequal load. Voltage designs can create unequal currents when each side sees a different impedance to its surroundings.

The assumption that breaks it

Selecting either device only by its impedance ratio ignores balance, choking impedance, frequency, loss, and the real antenna load.

Build or deploy it correctly

Define the required transformation and common-mode control separately, examine measured performance over the intended load and bands, then verify feed-line current and heating after installation.

Configuration boundary

Use the exact product guide, electrical topology, geometry, materials, loading, feed, return path, support, and environment. Mechanical fit or a visually similar arrangement does not establish electrical equivalence.
