Grounding a Permanent Home Amateur Radio Station

Quick answer: A permanent station needs one coordinated system: AC safety grounding, equipment bonding, a bonded antenna-entry and electrode system, surge protection on every incoming conductor, and the antenna’s own RF return/common-mode design.

Permanent stations should be planned from the service entrance to the antenna rather than by adding isolated remedies after RFI or lightning problems appear.

Recommended topology

  1. Inventory every conductor entering the building: coax, balanced line, rotor/control cable, DC, AC, Ethernet, telephone, satellite, and grounding conductors.
  2. Create a single, accessible cable-entry area with appropriate listed protectors and shield bonding.
  3. Bond the antenna entry electrode to the premises grounding-electrode system using the required conductor and routing.
  4. Bond station equipment to a common low-impedance point or reference plane.
  5. Design each antenna’s radial, counterpoise, balanced feed, and common-mode control separately.
  6. Protect power and data paths as well as coax.
  7. Label, inspect, photograph, and maintain the system.

Why single-point entry matters

Surge energy creates damaging voltage differences when conductors enter at separated locations or reference different electrodes. A coordinated entry reduces the path through radio equipment and interior wiring.

Operational safety

No grounding system makes transmitting during lightning safe. Establish a disconnect and shutdown procedure that can be completed before the storm reaches the station. Do not handle cables during nearby lightning activity.
