Grounding a Remote Antenna Tuner

Give a remote tuner the correct RF return path and keep permanent earth bonding and lightning protection as separate coordinated functions.

Quick answer: A remote tuner needs an intentional antenna return path. For a directly fed wire or vertical, that usually means radials or a counterpoise; a bonded earth connection may be added for permanent safety/lightning design but does not replace them.

The tuner is part of the antenna system. Locating it at the feed point can reduce loss in a mismatched transmission line, but it does not create the missing side of an unbalanced antenna.

Three common configurations

Configuration RF return Protection/bonding
Direct wire or vertical Counterpoise, radial field, ground screen, or approved conductive structure. Permanent installations may also connect to the bonded entry/electrode system.
Coax-fed balanced antenna The second antenna leg; correct BALUN/current choke controls common mode. Entry protection and bonding remain separate station functions.
Balanced feed line through approved BALUN The opposite balanced-line conductor; line and BALUN are part of the load seen by the tuner. Earth/bonding does not select the transformer ratio or replace balance.

Installation priorities

  1. Mount the tuner near the feed point.
  2. Connect the radiator and RF return using short, robust conductors.
  3. Route coax, power, and control cables away from the radiator and counterpoise where practical.
  4. Use the manufacturer-required choke or isolation arrangement.
  5. Tune at low power, verify stability, then raise power gradually while monitoring RFI and heating.

Why “grounded to earth” sometimes appears to cure tuning

The earth conductor changes the tuner’s return impedance and common-mode current. That can move a difficult load into tuning range. The correct conclusion is that the prior return path was inadequate or uncontrolled - not that earth is always the best RF return.
