A desktop station often contains several parallel connections: AC protective earth, DC negative, coax shields, USB, Ethernet, audio, tuner control, and a bonding bus. The goal is not to eliminate connections but to make their functions and current paths deliberate.
Recommended architecture
- Power AC equipment from correctly wired outlets with required protective grounding.
- Bond the transceiver, power-supply chassis, external tuner, amplifier, and entry panel to a common low-impedance station bonding arrangement.
- Keep the connection from entry panel to the bonded electrode system short and direct according to the protection plan.
- Provide the antenna’s required radial, counterpoise, balanced conductor, BALUN, UNUN, and/or choke at the correct location.
- Route signal and power cables deliberately and apply ferrite only where measurements or controlled testing identify common-mode current.
Desktop tuner distinction
A tuner located in the shack does not move the antenna feed point into the shack electrically without consequences. If it feeds an end-fed wire or balanced line, high RF voltage and current can exist on tuner cabinets, “ground” wires, and nearby conductors. A remote feed-point tuner usually reduces the length of highly mismatched line but still requires the correct RF return.
If touching the tuner changes the match
Your body has become part of the RF system. Reduce power and inspect bonding, the return path, wire length, feed-line routing, and common-mode control before normal operation.
