Use the Inverted L when the site can provide height near the feed end but cannot stretch the complete radiator in one straight slope.

Build the documented shape

  • Raise the wire over one support so the first portion is vertical and the remaining portion runs horizontally.
  • Keep the matching unit low and connect the specified counterpoise.
  • Support the far end with nonconductive line at the guide height.
  • Preserve clearance from branches, structures, vehicles, and people.

Why an operator chooses it

The mix of vertical and horizontal current produces different low- and higher-angle opportunities than a pure vertical or low horizontal wire. It also fits sites where a 73 ft straight run is impractical.

Measure the vertical rise and the horizontal span; “looks like an L” is not a repeatable geometry.

Common ways this goes wrong

  • Allowing the vertical wire to touch the support.
  • Treating the horizontal end as optional excess wire.
  • Running the counterpoise alongside the radiator.
  • Assuming a low SWR proves the shape is working as intended.

  • Confirm the exact radiator, matching unit, return path, feed line, and support arrangement.
  • Keep conductors and supports clear of power lines and uncontrolled public access.
  • Reproduce the guide dimensions before experimenting.
  • Inspect every connection and begin testing at low power.
  • Record geometry, band, tuner state, and the result before changing one variable.
