Build the documented shape
- Drive the spike approximately halfway into suitable ground with a plastic or rubber mallet.
- Install the matching unit and whip by hand.
- Unwind and route the counterpoise from the documented connection.
- Connect the choked coax and perform a low-power test.
Why an operator chooses it
The vertical gives omnidirectional short- to medium-range opportunity and packs down quickly. The optional counterpoise kit can provide a more developed radial system where the guide permits it.
Read the site before opening the bag
Keep the counterpoise out of foot traffic and do not place the whip where a fall can reach conductors, vehicles, or people.
Common ways this goes wrong
- Extending the whip before the base is stable.
- Leaving the counterpoise on the winder.
- Using full SS17 length on every higher band when the guide supplies optimized starting lengths.
- Skipping the tuner check on bands that require it.

- Confirm the exact radiator, matching unit, return path, feed line, and support arrangement.
- Keep conductors and supports clear of power lines and uncontrolled public access.
- Reproduce the guide dimensions before experimenting.
- Inspect every connection and begin testing at low power.
- Record geometry, band, tuner state, and the result before changing one variable.
