Portable Magnetic Loop Tuning Workflow

A portable magnetic loop is tuned as a complete high-Q system: final position and orientation first, minimum power for tuning, small capacitor adjustments, continuous SWR monitoring, and retuning after frequency or environment changes.

Start here: A portable magnetic loop is tuned as a complete high-Q system: final position and orientation first, minimum power for tuning, small capacitor adjustments, continuous SWR monitoring, and retuning after frequency or environment changes.

Make the field decision

  • Place the loop clear of people and nearby conductors.
  • Connect the documented feed and control arrangement.
  • Begin at receive level or the lowest permitted tuning power.
  • Approach resonance with small adjustments.
  • Recheck after moving the loop, changing frequency, or changing power.

What usually goes wrong

  • Touching or approaching the loop during transmit.
  • Sweeping high power through resonance.
  • Assuming one tuning setting covers an entire band.

Turn the idea into evidence

Build the complete station, begin checks at low power, record the physical geometry and operating conditions, and change one variable at a time. A low SWR, one contact, or a connector that fits does not establish efficiency, coverage, structural suitability, or product compatibility.

Stop-work boundary:

Do not deploy near power lines, lightning, unsafe wind, unstable supports, uncontrolled public access, or with damaged equipment. Follow current product manuals, battery and charger instructions, land rules, license conditions, and RF-exposure requirements.
