Receiving Satellite Telemetry and Images

Receiving telemetry or images starts with the exact spacecraft downlink, mode, bandwidth, Doppler plan, decoder, time, and pass geometry; decoding software cannot recover a weak, clipped, or wrongly tuned RF signal.

Start with the practical answer: Receiving telemetry or images starts with the exact spacecraft downlink, mode, bandwidth, Doppler plan, decoder, time, and pass geometry; decoding software cannot recover a weak, clipped, or wrongly tuned RF signal.

Why this matters in the field

Telemetry or image decoding requires the correct mode, bandwidth, audio path and current software configuration.

Build the whole pass before the spacecraft arrives

A satellite contact is a moving link budget. The spacecraft changes bearing, elevation, range, Doppler shift, and apparent polarization throughout the pass. Current orbital elements, an accurate clock and location, a clear horizon, suitable antennas, low feed-line loss, correct radio capability, and disciplined shared-channel operation all matter at the same time.

Use this sequence

  1. Step 1: Select an active downlink.
  2. Step 2: Predict a good pass.
  3. Step 3: Record baseband or audio.
  4. Step 4: Correct Doppler.
  5. Step 5: Decode offline if needed.
  6. Step 6: Submit data only through official channels.

Read the result—not just one meter

  • Change one important variable at a time and restore the baseline before the next comparison.
  • Separate what was observed from what was inferred. Signal level, decoded quality, impedance, SWR, audio reports and error rate are different measurements.
  • Repeat the test. A result that cannot be reproduced should be recorded as provisional rather than turned into a general rule.
  • Use the lowest practical test power and preserve screenshots, analyzer files, photographs, radio settings and location notes.

The shortcut that causes trouble

Treating an incomplete decode as authoritative spacecraft data. This shortcut hides the limiting subsystem and can create an incorrect repair or operating conclusion.

A high predicted elevation is not a guarantee. Stale elements, a blocked horizon, polarization loss, receiver desense, an incorrect uplink or downlink, excessive power, or transmitting without hearing the downlink can waste the short operating window and interfere with other stations.

Source boundary

Current AMSAT operating material and controlled CKB satellite references. Confirm the current rule, guide, frequency, configuration, site, and safety limit before acting.
