Troubleshooting CHA URT1 Balanced Feedline

A controlled diagnostic sequence for unstable tuning, weather-sensitive behavior, band-specific failures, common-mode clues, and useful Support evidence.

Short answer: Troubleshoot in a controlled order: power, connections, moisture, routing, symmetry, line length, then BALUN/system selection. Change one variable at a time and retest every intended band.

Before changing the antenna

  1. Reduce transmitter output to the documented tuning range. Ten watts is the normal recommended tuning level; never exceed the current manual limit.
  2. Confirm stable 12-14 VDC power at the Coupler Unit and inspect the RF plus power/control coax between Coupler and Tuner.
  3. Confirm that no unapproved device is installed between the Coupler Unit and Tuner Unit.
  4. Verify that the Beehive connector is unused and that the balanced-feed path begins at the bottom ANTENNA connector.
  5. Inspect the short jumper, BALUN, balanced terminals, feedline, and antenna connections.

If tuning is unstable or changes with weather

  • Dry and weatherproof connectors and the BALUN enclosure.
  • Inspect window line for water, dirt, ice, damaged insulation, or contact with wet vegetation.
  • Move the line away from metal, wiring, the ground, and conductive supports.
  • Confirm the line is not coiled or tightly bundled.
  • Check that both antenna legs and both line conductors remain symmetrical.

If one or two bands will not tune

A band-specific problem often means the complete antenna and line system presents an extreme impedance at the tuner on those frequencies. If the installation is correct, change balanced-line length in a controlled increment - for example, several feet - then retest all bands. Adding or removing line changes its electrical length and can move the difficult impedance.

Do not repeatedly press Tune at high power. Do not assume that a different transformer ratio is automatically the first or safest correction.

If many or all bands will not tune

  • Confirm the correct connector path and current BALUN orientation.
  • Check for an open or shorted conductor with the system disconnected and safely discharged.
  • Inspect for a damaged BALUN, overheated connector, carbon tracking, or arcing.
  • Confirm the antenna is a balanced system appropriate for this connection.
  • Verify that the selected line and antenna dimensions are plausible for the lowest intended band.

Common-mode clues

RF in the shack, changing SWR when the coax is moved, audio distortion, computer interference, or a pattern that changes sharply with feedline routing can indicate common-mode current. These symptoms are not proof by themselves. Inspect antenna symmetry, line routing, the current BALUN, connector bonding, and the coax path as a complete system.

Record before contacting Support

  • Antenna type, total wire length, geometry, and height.
  • Balanced-line type, length, and routing.
  • BALUN manufacturer, model, ratio, and classification.
  • Band, frequency, initial SWR, tuning result, power, and mode.
  • Coax types and lengths, power-supply voltage, and any inline devices.
  • Clear photos of the URT1 connections, BALUN, feedpoint, and line routing.
Stop immediately for visible arcing, hot connectors or transformer enclosure, damaged insulation, smoke, unsafe supports, lightning, or any possibility of contact with power conductors.
