Understanding the K Index

The K index summarizes geomagnetic disturbance over a three-hour interval on a quasi-logarithmic 0-to-9 scale, based on magnetic-field variation at an observatory; planetary Kp combines multiple stations.

The useful model: The K index summarizes geomagnetic disturbance over a three-hour interval on a quasi-logarithmic 0-to-9 scale, based on magnetic-field variation at an observatory; planetary Kp combines multiple stations.

What controls the result

Rising K/Kp can signal disturbed high-latitude and HF conditions, auroral absorption, changed MUF, and path instability, though effects differ by latitude and route.

The misleading shortcut

Kp is not a universal HF quality score: some paths or VHF auroral modes may become interesting while others deteriorate.

Make the better decision

Read the recent sequence and path latitude, compare absorption and auroral products, adjust band and route expectations, and record what the specific path does.

Evidence boundary

Propagation and antenna metrics are meaningful only with their frequency, path, geometry, reference plane, loss assumptions, and measurement method. Use current observations and the exact installed system.
