Understanding Solar Flux Index (SFI)

SFI is the observed 10.7-centimeter solar radio flux, a stable proxy associated with the solar activity that helps sustain upper-ionosphere ionization.

The useful model: SFI is the observed 10.7-centimeter solar radio flux, a stable proxy associated with the solar activity that helps sustain upper-ionosphere ionization.

What controls the result

Higher values often support higher F-region electron density and upper-HF openings, but the response depends on season, latitude, time, and recent geomagnetic conditions.

The misleading shortcut

SFI does not describe flare absorption or magnetic disturbance, and one high daily value cannot promise 10- or 6-meter propagation.

Make the better decision

Read the trend with K/A indices, X-ray flux, foF2 and path forecasts; then listen for beacons and real stations before selecting the band.

Evidence boundary

Propagation and antenna metrics are meaningful only with their frequency, path, geometry, reference plane, loss assumptions, and measurement method. Use current observations and the exact installed system.
