Understanding Sunspot Numbers

Sunspot number is an index based on counted sunspot groups and spots, used to track the solar cycle and long-term activity associated with ionospheric support.

HF Propagation Solar Activity Reviewed 2026-07-14
The useful model: Sunspot number is an index based on counted sunspot groups and spots, used to track the solar cycle and long-term activity associated with ionospheric support.

What controls the result

It correlates broadly with solar activity but not perfectly with today’s 10.7-cm flux, flare risk, or the electron density over a particular path.

The misleading shortcut

Visible spots do not directly “reflect” radio signals, and a daily count is not a short-term propagation forecast.

Make the better decision

Use smoothed sunspot values for cycle context, current SFI and ionosonde data for HF support, and flare/geomagnetic products for immediate disturbances.

Evidence boundary

Propagation and antenna metrics are meaningful only with their frequency, path, geometry, reference plane, loss assumptions, and measurement method. Use current observations and the exact installed system.
