When Your Coax Becomes Part of the Antenna

Recognize and correct common-mode current when the outside of the coax shield and station wiring become unintended antenna conductors.

Quick answer: If equal and opposite currents are not confined to the intended conductors, RF can flow on the outside of the coax shield. The feed line and connected station wiring then become part of the antenna.

This common-mode path can alter the feed-point impedance, pattern, received noise, tuner behavior, and RF voltage in the shack. The current varies with frequency, feed-line length, routing, nearby conductors, and the antenna return path.

Common clues

  • SWR changes when the feed line moves.
  • Noise changes when coax, computer, or power cables are disconnected.
  • RF appears in audio, touchscreens, USB devices, or network equipment.
  • The station works on some bands but becomes unstable on others.
  • Contacts or field strength depend strongly on coax placement.

Why a choke works

A current choke presents impedance to current flowing on the outside of the coax shield while allowing the intended differential signal inside the cable to pass. Choke performance is frequency dependent. One winding or ferrite mix is not equally effective on every band.

Why a choke is not the whole antenna

Suppressing the coax path without providing another RF return can make an end-fed or directly fed antenna difficult to tune. Correct the complete system: antenna geometry, radial or counterpoise, BALUN/UNUN function, choke location, and feed-line routing.

Controlled test

  1. Save the baseline SWR and symptom.
  2. Reduce power.
  3. Install a known, band-appropriate current choke at the suspected boundary.
  4. Keep every other cable and antenna dimension fixed.
  5. Repeat the test. A change identifies common-mode involvement but does not by itself establish the final choke location or return-path design.
