Why NEC Models and Real Antennas Differ

NEC models solve electromagnetic behavior for a defined wire or surface geometry and environment; real antennas differ when material, feed, ground, support, loss, objects, or construction depart from those inputs.

The design point: NEC models solve electromagnetic behavior for a defined wire or surface geometry and environment; real antennas differ when material, feed, ground, support, loss, objects, or construction depart from those inputs.

Why the complete system matters

Segmentation, wire radius, source placement, ground model, loading, symmetry, numerical convergence, and post-processing also affect the simulated result. A model can be internally correct and still represent the wrong installation.

The assumption that breaks it

Matching a curve visually or obtaining “convergence passed” does not correlate the model to field SWR, efficiency, gain, or pattern.

Build or deploy it correctly

Record exact geometry and topology, test segmentation and ground sensitivity, state excluded elements, compare with calibrated measurements, and publish the model as bounded evidence rather than a guarantee.

Configuration boundary

Use the exact product guide, electrical topology, geometry, materials, loading, feed, return path, support, and environment. Mechanical fit or a visually similar arrangement does not establish electrical equivalence.
