CHA F-LOOP 4.0 · Manually Tuned Portable Magnetic Loop

A compact 40–10 m magnetic loop engineered for QRP, HOA and highly portable operation where low weight, fast deployment and local-noise control matter.

Why Chameleon is building a new loop

The field portability operators wanted—without bringing back the F-LOOP 3.0

The CHA F-LOOP 3.0 is not returning. Its large two-section aluminum radiator and supporting hardware produced a capable system, but also a package of approximately 4 lb.

The CHA F-LOOP 4.0 starts again around a smaller enclosure, an ABR coaxial radiator, a proprietary carbon-fiber support mast and a repeatable inductive coupling loop. The approved Prototype 6 system is approximately 2.6 lb—roughly 35% lighter than the former 4 lb system—while retaining manual tuning from 40 through 10 meters.

It is designed for the operator who needs a directional, high-Q antenna in an HOA, apartment, campsite or compact field position and understands the trade: a small loop saves space and can reject noise from selected directions, but it must be retuned as frequency changes and it cannot make a poor indoor RF environment disappear.

Not designed for

The former 1 in two-section aluminum radiator or F-LOOP 3.0 structural accessories. The lighter 4.0 architecture does not inherit those load ratings.

Built-in tuning aid

Use the LED to find resonance—then verify the match

Prototype 6 demonstration: the internal LED provides a visual indication as the manually adjusted loop approaches resonance. Final confirmation must still be made with an SWR display or antenna analyzer.

The internal LED samples RF energy in the tuned circuit. At approximately 5 W, it begins to illuminate as the loop approaches resonance and becomes a fast visual aid while the operator turns the tuning control.

  1. Set the radio to low power—about 5 W.
  2. Transmit only long enough to rotate the control toward maximum LED brightness.
  3. Finish the adjustment with the radio’s SWR display or an antenna analyzer.
  4. Never exceed 15 W CW or 30 W SSB.

The LED is a resonance aid, not a calibrated SWR meter. Maximum brightness does not prove efficiency, radiation pattern or a safe installation.

Protected manual-tuning enclosure

The compact enclosure brings the manual tuning control, visual LED aid and field connections together as one purpose-designed assembly. Production construction details remain confidential while manufacturing engineering is completed.

ABR coaxial assemblies

The 87 in main radiator and 12 ft RG58 feed assembly are sourced through ABR Industries. The feed line incorporates an RFI choke, while the production connectors and cable lengths preserve a controlled, repeatable layout.

Chameleon mechanical system

The 6 in red-anodized coupling loop is formed from 3/4 × 1/8 in aluminum bar. Together with the carbon-fiber telescopic mast and compact mounting enclosure, it forms one repeatable deployable system instead of leaving feed-loop geometry to field improvisation.

Measured prototype evidence

Indoor SWR samples—useful, but not a radiation claim

These RigExpert traces were measured on Prototype 6 indoors. They demonstrate that the manual capacitor and coupling arrangement can be adjusted to a low feed-point SWR on the sampled bands. Results will vary with location, nearby metal, building materials, feed-line routing and coupling geometry. A low indoor SWR does not prove efficiency or that transmitted energy is reaching outdoors effectively.

Choose a band below to inspect the normalised upper-hemisphere elevation pattern and the closest available above-horizon direction cut. The controlled reference places the bottom of the 87-inch tuned main loop one loop diameter above average ground.

Use these plots for direction—not promises. The pattern-only model directly excites the controlled main radiator. It excludes the physical six-inch isolated coupling loop, feed line, choke, matching behaviour and component losses; it therefore does not establish installed SWR, efficiency, realised gain, bandwidth, range or RF exposure.

Practical reading: a vertical small loop responds most strongly in its own plane and has reduced-response directions broadside to that plane. Real ground modifies the ideal free-space figure-eight, especially near the horizon, so a plotted reduction is not a guaranteed perfect field null. Rotate the complete antenna while receiving to minimise local noise, then retune at its final position.

Field safety

A small loop is compact—not low consequence

  • High RF voltage and current can exist around the capacitor, radiator and connectors even at QRP power.
  • Keep people, animals and conductive objects clear while transmitting; never touch or adjust the loop during transmission.
  • Begin every tune at low power and use short transmissions. Respect the 15 W CW and 30 W SSB limits.
  • Use the current production guide for RF-exposure, placement, tuning and operating limits when released.

Complete Prototype 6 details

Development state: Approved functional prototype; production engineering and quotation in progress.

Manufacturing path: Production sourcing and enclosure engineering are in progress. Chameleon Antenna will perform final acceptance testing, packing and shipment.

Current target: December 2026, subject to manufacturing capacity, component supply, validation and final production approval. The release may occur earlier or later.

Prototype weights: tuning enclosure approximately 0.8 lb; coupling loop approximately 0.31 lb; telescopic carbon-fiber mast approximately 0.31 lb; complete system approximately 2.6 lb.

Production boundary: photographs show Prototype 6. Enclosure finish, controls, fittings, mounting threads, cable details, carry bag and other production elements may change.
