CHA FRS Kit Deployment

"Very easy to deploy at a POTA activation and initial test results are comparable to a 4-wire counterpoise system. I like the orange / olive fabric combination. No wires to trip over, deploy and rewind. I store my FRS kit in a 6L mesh stuff sack from REI ($12). This allows the strips to dry more easily after use."

Larry H. (5/5)

Wow! Better Than Expected . . .

"I have many Chameleon products and was fully expecting a quality product. However, I used the FSR system for the first time this past weekend and was blown away at the ease of setup and breakdown. The best part was the incredibly low SWR readings for 40m through 10m. The FSR system just became my favorite radial solution for sure."

Sterling H. (5/5)

absolutely what I was looking for!

"I was always afraid that my wire radials would be tripped over by passersby, sending my antenna and radio crashing to the ground. These are quick to deploy, easy to see, work great, and are probably a conversation piece as well. I am telling everyone I know to buy a set!"

KC9YL (5/5)

awesome product

"Flexible and durable, high vis on one side subdued on other. Much safer in camp less tripping hazard."

Matt T. (5/5)

Great stuff

"SS17 + blank adapter and these is floored my SWR meter at 1. 0 across 20. Arguably easier and nicer than wire for setup/teardown at the expense of size in the pack."

Adam P. (5/5)

JOHN J. (5/5)

The best ground plane for my vertical!

"I purchased my Chelegance MC-750 vertical prior to discovering Chameleon. Then I found out about these Faraday Strips and decided to marry the two. I have found my combination to be a winner for me. I highly recommend using these strips as the ground plane for your vertical."

Mark k. (5/5)

Pairs perfectly with the CHA SS25

"The Faraday Strips work perfectly with the SS25 Whip. They're quick to unroll and just as quick to put away. No tangled wires. Super cool"

Bernard L. (5/5)

Game changer

"Game changer for ground radials Amazing SWR with both the SS17 and SS25 vertical Great product at a reasonable price"

Q&A

FSR — Faraday Strip Radial System · Counterpoise & Radials

A radial or counterpoise component for documented unbalanced antenna configurations.

Why operators make room for it

Lay down a serious radial field without carrying a tangled bundle of wire

CHA FSR — Faraday Strip Radial System is a radiator or RF-return component used inside specific documented antenna configurations; it is not automatically a complete antenna by itself.

The CHA FSR (Faraday Strip Radial System) is a man-packable, MPAS READY radial and counterpoise system engineered for enhanced efficiency, rugged durability, and portability in the field. Designed for serious operators, the CHA FSR delivers superior performance while remaining compact and easy to transport. In initial field tests conducted in Northern Alabama, the CHA FSR demonstrated a median increase in relative field strength between 23% and 28% compared to the standard four 12. 5 ft.

CHA FSR — Faraday Strip Radial System becomes valuable when its exact radiator or RF-return role is understood. Confirm where it attaches, which feed or matching component it works with, what support is needed, and whether it serves as a complete antenna, alternate radiator, extension, radial, or counterpoise. That context helps an owner expand a field kit deliberately instead of buying duplicate one-purpose hardware.

For an MPAS READY customer, the longer-term value is reuse. This product may participate in more than one documented configuration as the station grows, provided each path is verified for the complete antenna. Shared threads and connectors are useful mechanically; they are never enough by themselves to prove electrical compatibility.

CHA FSR — Faraday Strip Radial System

The CHA FSR (Faraday Strip Radial System) is a man-packable, MPAS READY radial and counterpoise system engineered for enhanced efficiency, rugged durability, and portability in the field. Designed for serious operators, the CHA FSR delivers superior performance while remaining compact and easy to transport.

Enhanced Performance

In initial field tests conducted in Northern Alabama, the CHA FSR demonstrated a median increase in relative field strength between 23% and 28% compared to the standard four 12.5 ft. wire radials included with the Basic Vertical (BV) and Portable Resonant Vertical (PRV) antennas. With further testing and refinement, performance efficiency is expected to increase.

MPAS Ready

The CHA FSR is fully MPAS READY, making it compatible with all Chameleon Antenna vertical antenna systems, including the SS17, SS25, MPAS, MCC, and many others.

Durable Stainless Steel Coupling Adapter

The system includes a special stainless steel 3/8-24 coupling adapter, designed for universal mounting. This adapter features a 3/8-24 male thread at the bottom to sandwich the FSR securely on any 3/8-24 mount system, and a 3/8-24 female thread on top to accommodate bases such as the CHA BLANK, CHA HYBRID, and CHA MCC.

Portable and Practical

At a packaged weight of 5 lbs. and compact dimensions of TWO 6 x 4 inches bundles, the CHA FSR is built for portability. Whether you’re heading into the mountains, the field, or an emergency deployment, this system packs down easily for transport without sacrificing performance.

Simple Deployment

  • Attach the Faraday Strips to your mount using the included hardware.
  • Lay the strips out in an “X” pattern for an omni-directional radiation pattern.
  • Secure the strip ends with the included tent stakes.

Manufacturing Process

The CHA FSR is built using a multi-layered composite design that combines advanced electrical performance with rugged field durability.

At its core, each radial strip features a Faraday conductive fabric composed of Copper–Nickel–Polyester fibers woven in a diamond pattern for multidirectional conductivity and mechanical strength.

Technical Fabric Data:

  • Fabric Thickness: 0.078 mm
  • Surface Resistance: Below 0.05 Ω
  • Material Composition: Copper, Nickel, Polyester
  • Woven Type: Diamond Pattern

To ensure long-term environmental resistance, the Faraday cloth is encapsulated between two layers of 900D Oxford cloth — the same TAN-colored, abrasion-resistant material used in the CHA Sling Bag. This durable outer shell protects the conductive layers from moisture, UV exposure, and wear, while maintaining the system’s flexibility and packability.

Each strip is equipped with three brass grommets — one at each end and one at the center — providing secure mounting and maintaining electrical continuity across the full length of the strip. The grommets also serve as contact points to ensure balanced current distribution during operation.

The CHA FSR includes a precision-machined stainless steel 3/8-24 coupling adapter (CHA FSR-A), designed to sandwich the system between any 3/8-24 mount and the antenna base. The adapter features a male 3/8-24 thread at the bottom and a female 3/8-24 thread on top, compatible with all Chameleon bases including the CHA BLANK, CHA HYBRID, and CHA MCC.

All assembly and quality control are completed in Nevada, USA, ensuring every unit meets Chameleon Antenna’s high manufacturing standards.

Performance Enhancement

The CHA FSR improves vertical antenna performance by addressing the key limitations of traditional wire radials — limited ground-plane surface area, inconsistent current distribution, and low mechanical resilience in field conditions.

The broad Faraday conductive surface creates a large, low-impedance return path, drastically reducing ground losses and improving the antenna’s radiation efficiency. The diamond weave of the Copper–Nickel fabric promotes uniform current flow in multiple directions, stabilizing the antenna’s omnidirectional radiation pattern and improving signal strength across all azimuths.

Field testing in Northern Alabama revealed a median increase in relative field strength between 23% and 28% compared to standard 4-wire counterpoise kits, with additional efficiency gains expected as ongoing testing continues.

Beyond electrical performance, the CHA FSR introduces significant safety and durability advantages:

  • Enhanced Visibility: The TAN 900D Oxford outer layers make the CHA FSR highly visible compared to thin, low-profile wire radials. This is especially important in environments where people, children, pets, or elderly individuals may be walking near the antenna system. The increased visibility reduces tripping hazards and improves overall field safety.
  • Increased Mechanical Strength: Unlike traditional wire radials that can easily break or kink if stepped on, the CHA FSR’s reinforced Oxford layers and flexible conductive core can withstand accidental foot traffic without losing structural or electrical integrity. This durability ensures dependable operation and minimizes downtime in the field.
  • Field Repairability: In the rare case of damage, the CHA FSR’s layered construction and wide connection points make field repairs simpler and faster compared to repairing or replacing thin wire radials, which often require cutting and re-soldering.

These combined electrical and mechanical advantages make the CHA FSR not only a more efficient ground-plane system, but also a safer, more practical solution for portable and semi-permanent installations in public or group settings.

PROS

  • Superior Efficiency: Increases relative field strength by 23–28% compared to traditional wire radials.
